Podcast #94
How a Toxic Boss Can Destroy Your Confidence and Make You Doubt Yourself.
A toxic boss can make even a high performer doubt their abilities, confidence, and entire career. If you used to know exactly what you were capable of but now constantly question yourself, your workplace may be affecting your self-image more than you realize.
Why Am I Suddenly Experiencing Self-Doubt?
High performers are used to solving problems by working harder.
- Something does not work? Improve it.
- You miss a goal? Try again.
- You receive criticism? Reflect and do better.
That strategy works well in a healthy environment. But a toxic workplace can turn it against you. When your boss constantly criticizes you or sets you up for failure, you may keep asking yourself, “What am I doing wrong?”
You simplify your approach, but it is suddenly not complex enough. You add more detail, and now you are overcomplicating things. Eventually, you start thinking, “No matter what I do, it is not right.”
That is where self-doubt starts to grow.
Your Self-Reflection Can Become a Trap.
Self-reflection is one of your strengths.
But when you are dealing with a toxic boss, constantly looking for what you could have done differently may make things worse.
There is already a small part of most people that wonders:
- Am I good enough?
- Am I capable enough?
- Do I really deserve this position?
A toxic workplace can keep watering that part. The goal is not to stop self-reflecting. It is to stop automatically assuming that your boss’s criticism is the truth.

How Do You Know If It Is You or Your Boss?
Take a step back and look at your career before this toxic relationship.
Ask yourself:
- Do I have a track record of success?
- Have I generally received good performance reviews?
- Have I achieved the goals I set for myself?
- Was I successful before this boss?
- Did things change suddenly after something happened between us?
- What do people who genuinely know me think about my abilities?
Ask trusted people for honest feedback if you need another perspective.
You are looking for facts, not more validation.
Stop Carrying Your Boss’s Narrative.
Pay attention to the stories you have started believing.
Maybe you believe you are not smart enough.
Or maybe you think you are too complicated, too slow, or not capable enough.
Ask yourself:
- What narrative have I been believing?
- Is this based on facts or someone else’s opinion?
- What part of me is dominating my internal communication?
- Am I allowing a toxic person to define my self-image?
You can understand why your boss behaves the way they do without accepting their version of you.

Focus on What You Can Control.
You cannot make your boss more secure and you cannot force a toxic person to change.
What you can control is your own response.
You can work on:
- Your self-talk.
- Your perspective.
- Your confidence.
- The narrative you believe about yourself.
- The decisions you make next.
The bigger goal is an unshakable self-image.
Your confidence cannot depend entirely on whether one person at work thinks you are good enough.
In Summary:
A toxic boss can gradually undermine a high performer’s confidence through criticism, negative narratives, and situations where they are not set up to succeed.
The way forward is to:
- Look at your actual track record.
- Separate facts from your boss’s narrative.
- Notice when self-doubt takes over.
- Reconnect with your confident self.
- Become intentional about your self-talk.
- Focus on what you can control.
You have not suddenly become less capable just because someone treats you that way.

Can a toxic boss cause self-doubt?
Yes. Constant criticism and negative messaging can strengthen the self-doubt that already exists in most people, particularly when you keep questioning what you could have done differently.
How do I rebuild confidence after a toxic workplace?
Start by reconnecting with your track record. Look at your previous successes and notice the negative narratives you have started believing. Then consciously work on your self-talk and reconnect with the confident part of yourself.
