But when you explain too much to a toxic boss, you’re giving them ammo.
Over explaining can come off as defensive, even if you’re just being detailed. And guess what? Toxic bosses love to twist your words.
What to do instead:
Keep it short, factual, and relevant to what they need to know. Don’t try to impress or justify, just inform. If there’s an issue, bring two possible solutions and move on. You’re not in a courtroom. You’re not on trial. Act like it.
Mistake #2: Seeking Validation
This one’s sneaky. High performers often stay way too long in toxic environments because they’re chasing validation that’s never coming.
You keep thinking, “Maybe if I just do this better, they’ll finally acknowledge me.”

Mistake #3: Emotional Oversharing

When you overshare, you hand over your emotional data. And toxic bosses? They will use it against you.

Be emotionally intelligent, not emotionally exposed. Save your deepest processing for your journal, your therapist, or your coach. In the office? Keep it pro, keep it level.
Mistake #4: Letting Them “Coach” You
Some toxic bosses disguise control as coaching.
They’ll say things like, “Back when I was in your shoes…” then give advice that somehow benefits them more than you.
This isn’t mentorship. It’s manipulation.
What to do instead:
Say “thanks,” then step back and reflect in private. Ask:
- Does this advice actually help me grow long-term?
- Or is it helping them stay in power?
If it’s not building your career chessboard, leave it off the board.
Mistake #5: Trying to Fix the Relationship
You’re a problem solver. You want peace. You believe with enough effort, things can get better.
But here’s the hard truth: You can’t fix a system that isn’t broken, it’s working exactly as your toxic boss designed it.

Stop trying to be the hero. Protect your boundaries. Conserve your energy. Shift your focus from “fixing them” to planning your next move.
Mistake #6: Not Documenting Anything
If things go south, and in toxic environments, they often do, it’s your word against theirs.
And they have more power. Unless you have receipts.
What to do instead:
- After every meeting, send a summary email
- Document patterns of behavior (gaslighting, threats, harassment)
- Confirm vague assignments in writing
- Save screenshots and keep backups outside of company systems
This is your paper trail. Not just for HR. For your sanity, your future job, and if needed your lawyer.
